I hate to respond to myself, but I screwed up. Up too late, you know.
sb_mixer_unload() was what I was thinking of. Anyway, sbmixnum is defined
in sb_mixer.c and pre2-3 compiles fine for me. Try with a clean tree and
if it still fails send me your .config
