shm: the confusion continues

OK, so I have 2.3.51, I've got a shm filesystem mounted, but many
applications still complain about shmget, and the gimp ... well, it
won't run at all:

   pbd[13]>df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
   /dev/sda1 101075 66266 29590 69% /
   none - - 0 - /proc
   /dev/sda4 746419 531212 176651 75% /usr
   /dev/sdb1 2478138 2236099 216416 91% /usr/local
   /dev/sdb2 189742 39302 150440 21% /tape
   none 4194304 0 4194304 0% /var/shm
   pbd[14]>gimp
   Message: Passed serialization test

** ERROR **: could not attach to gimp shared memory segment

   aborting...
   gimp terminated: sigint caught

What do I have to do to end this kind of nonsense ? Where do I read
about it so that I can fix it myself and/or understand what on earth
is going on here ?
