On my next attempt, I wrote two tracks to the CD, then did
"cdrecord -fix". After a few minutes, I got:

 I/O error : dev 08:03, sector 6914108
scsi0: disabled or bad target 0 lun 0
SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 25040000
 I/O error : dev 08:03, sector 2
scsi0 : done.
scsi0 : disabled. Unload and reload
Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In interrupt handler - not syncing
