kswapd a zombie.

Moi!

Running 2.3.99-pre3, I played around with a memory hog today, adding and
removing swapfiles as appropriate. After some time I discovered kswapd
being in zombie state. Unsurprisingly, the next run of the hog took the
machine down when it was about to start swapping: it still responded to a
ping, but no remote login, no keyboard, not even SysRq worked.

The question being: what on earth could force kswapd into zombie
state? Can someone give me a clue?

Regards,

Daniel.
