In kernel 2.0 there is a maximum limit which defaults to 256. This limit
can be changed in /proc/sys/net/core/net_alias_max. In 2.2 and beyond
there is no limit (I think), and you don't even have to give alias names
for any extra addresses you assign to an interface if you use "ip" from
the iproute2 package.
