I reinstalled everything using 2.2.15pre20 and the problem is gone.
Basically, after my first install, 3dm would display:
3ware Disk Monitor Version 0.4.001
3ware Disk information gathered at Thu Apr 27 14:21:29 2000
Linux: 2.2.15pre20 Computer Name: station
1 3ware Storage Controller present.
-- garbage....trash..beeep.....trash. beep...trash....grabeg. garbage....trash..beeep.....trash. ...Now all is well.
