Ideally, yes, they are unique. Realistically they are not always.
One could potentially set the MAC address as mentioned in another
message in this thread. I've also heard of certain manufacturers
that don't always assign unique addresses to every piece of hard-
ware.

I'm not saying I'm against the idea; it's just not a panacea.
