I'm interested by the improvement in performance between switched and
direct... It could be coincidence, but I don't believe in that :-)

Other things to try:

* That 3Com NIC you said you had - repeat test 4 with it, instead of the
Intel NIC.

* Do you have any other Linux boxes around? Try the test between a pair of
Linux boxes, or a Linux box and a *BSD, or anything non-Sun.

First, I want to rule out some weird interaction with the Sun stack, or a
driver issue. If the same problem occurs with a 3Com NIC, and talking to a
Linux box, it's probably an issue with Linux itself :-(
