I'll be damned. That worked! Does this indicate a linux bug since it
doesn't work with DMA enabled? The drive supports DMA mode 2 as well as
PIO and the docs even say to enable DMA to "achieve top speeds for reading
and writing", which only makes sense. The docs have you enable DMA on
windoze and it works there.

FYI:

hdparm -i /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
 HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Input/output error

 Model=PLEXTOR CD-R PX-W8432T, FwRev=1.07, SerialNo=
 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }
 RawCHS=0/0/0, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
 BuffType=0(?), BuffSize=0kB, MaxMultSect=0
 DblWordIO=no, OldPIO=4, DMA=yes, OldDMA=2
 (maybe): CurCHS=0/0/0, CurSects=0, LBA=yes, LBAsects=0
 tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: sword0 sword1 sword2 mword0 mword1
*mword2
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:180,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4
