As far as I can remember, the kernel ask the BIOS to do the shutdown (can
someone correct me if I'm talking nonsense here ?)

Lots of BIOS'ses around with buggy APM implementation, no to mention
ACPI. Older kernel version OOPS'ed on shutdown on this machine.

I don't have a SMP machine, so I can't test it in that.
