Thanks Juan, that seems to be an effective *temporary* workaround.
Everything seems to compile ok now except that "make xconfig" still
fails. Also haven't yet done any run-time testing of resulting kernels.

OFFICIAL NOTICE TO KERNEL DEITIES: somebody broke xconfig in the pre8
release.

Anyone care to give a nutshell explanation of what "make oldconfig" does
and when to use it?
