Just to add another datapoint, my machine which I moved to 2.2.16pre3 a
few days back experienced the exact same thing.

May 17 03:06:37 spoke kernel: eth1: Transmit timed out, status 0000, PHY
status 782d, resetting...
May 17 03:06:38 spoke kernel: nfs: server forty not responding, still
trying
May 17 03:06:38 spoke kernel: nfs: server forty not responding, still
trying
May 17 03:06:39 spoke kernel: nfs: task 47629 can't get a request slot

I rebooted the machine using Alt-SysRq back into 2.2.15 which has been
working flawlessly as it was hosed by the time I got to it in the morning.
The machine had been running 2.2.16pre3 for about a day and a half when
it hung. I'm now running 2.2.16pre4.

This system is a K6-2 450, compiled with egcs-1.1.2. My .config is up at
http://spoke.nols.com/~drees/config-2.2.16pre3 (actually, this one is from
pre4, but it should be the same)

Let me know if you need any other information.
