i dunno, i'm running:

eepro100.c: $Revision: 1.20.2.3 $ 2000/03/02 Modified by Andrey V.
Savochkin <saw@saw.sw.com.sg> and others
eth0: Intel PCI EtherExpress Pro100 at 0xcc802000, IRQ 15.
  Board assembly 645520-034, Physical connectors present: RJ45
  Primary interface chip DP83840 PHY #1.

with 2.2.15pre18 and gcc 2.95.1 without any problems whatsoever. uptime is
around 39 days.
unless you're talking about a different chip/assembly.
