2.3.99-pre9 spontaneous reset after unpack on 386

Yesterday I installed 2.3.99-pre9 in my old 386. Today when I turned on the
computer it started doing an spontaneous (sp?) reset after unpacking the kernel
(the last message is the "Now booting the kernel" one, the 386 is slow enough
to allow me to read it). The fix was to boot into 2.2.15 and then warm-boot
into 2.3.99-pre9.

This is rather strange. It seems that something in 2.2.15 is initializing
something that 2.3.99-pre9 depends on (the problem happens before the console
is enabled, so I can't say where is the problem).
