2.2.16-pre7 kernel panic (typo fixed)

I get a kernel panic on bootup with 2.2.16-pre7 (smp):

        [...]
        scsi: 0 hosts
        scsi: detected total.
        Partition Check:
        request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted.
        VFS: Cannot open root device 08:05
        Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:05

with 2.2.15-final (smp)

        [...]
        scsi : 0 hosts.
        scsi : detected total.
        Partition check:
        RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
        VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
        [...]

Configs are the same EXCEPT

(fix) 2.2.15-final.smp: CONFIG_1GB=y
(fix) 2.2.15-final.smp: # CONFIG_2GB is not set

        2.2.16-pre7.smp: # CONFIG_1GB is not set
        2.2.16-pre7.smp: CONFIG_2GB=y

Any ideas/clues appreciated.
