You are being unfair. Sure, there are head hackers who are grumpy, and
there is the occasional flamethrower among them. And there are people who
like a good fight for no reason at all too. Just like in any other group of
people. You can see the fights in public here, which under normal
circumstances would take place more in private. But if you look closely,
there is much helping each other out going on (here and even more in
one-to-one contacts).
As elsewhere on the 'net, the best strategy is to grow a thick skin.
