Depmod trouble with 2.2.16 kernel

I compiled a new 2.2.16 kernel to replace the 2.2.12 kernel which ships
with RedHat 6.1. The kernel itself seems okay, however depmod complains
about unresolved symbols.

In an attempt to correct this myself, I have updated gcc to 2.95.2,
updated binutils to 2.9.1 and updated modutils to 2.3.11 to no avail.
Drivers compiled into the kernel are okay, my only issues are related to
module dependencies.
