attribute this one to a chair<->keyboard interface problem. i hadn't
plugged the speaker jack into the motherboard. it was still plugged
into my ALS100.

i'm now happily listening to my mp3's, everything is perfect.
i'll give myself 20 lashes of the LART stick, or whatever other
penance you require of me. :)
