With any luck, the new Makefiles will find all the sub directories
automatically. The business of SUB_DIRS, ALL_SUB_DIRS, MOD_SUB_DIRS
etc. is a kludge to speed up recursive make - get rid of recursive make
and we can afford to scan the tree ourselves.
