DVD-RAM on 2.2.17pre4 seems to work. I promised I'd test it.
The loss of partitioning means that getting some of my media mounted
is a lot more hassle, than what it used to be, but I've found a
workaround. Hope it doesn't break....

mount: you must specify the filesystem type
abraracourcix /var/log# fdisk /dev/scd0
You must set heads sectors and cylinders.
You can do this from the extra functions menu.
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/scd0: 0 heads, 0 sectors, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1 * 512 bytes
