Stephen Rothwell & I have been working on an alternative called dirnot
which uses realtime signals to indicate that changes have occurred in
a directory. Al Viro is against it as he feels realtime signals are
too heavyweight. Alan Cox is against the idea of allowing poll()
on a directory as he feels it has insurmountable race conditions.
Richard Gooch thinks he has a way around them. Al has a third alternative
involving a notifyfs which looks intriguing but I'm not sure it's more
lightweight than the signals. SGI have a patch which implements /dev/imon
like IRIX has, but I think almost everyone is against both the idea and
the implementation.

ie it's still under debate.
