Weirdness with NVIDIA KERNEL 0.94 and linux 2.2.16 SMP

When I compile my 2.2.16 kernel as single proccessor, the nvidia kernel
module works fine and quake3 works great, but when I compile the kernel
as smp (I have a dual proccessor p2-300 computer), and recompile NVIDIA
KERNEL, the modules load, but X dumps out saying it lost the connection
to X server. Additionally, it creates this Oops in my system log
(attachment)

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000c
