Try disabling PPP compression. I've observed link failures
when using BSD compression against certain dial access
gateways.

In /etc/ppp/options:

nobsdcomp
deflate 0,0
noaccomp
noccp
nodeflate
nopcomp
nopredictor1
novjccomp
