2.4.17/2.4.9 panic w/ S2462 tyan thunder board

From: Kreso (kreso@k.plenum.de)
Date: Thu Apr 25 2002 - 19:33:19 EST

Hi all,

I'm having strange kernel panic's with tyan thunder S2462 board
(I wasn't inspired with esr's ultimate linux box essay though, I found
it on the net only after I had problems :)

I use the version with adaptec 7899P on board, have disabled IDE
controllers, updated BIOS to the newest (2.10) version, with
athlon mp 1800+ processors and two additional PCI cards: 64bit NIC
BROADCOM NetXtreme BCM5700 and 32bit Symbios 53c875 SCSI controller.
I have two internal SCSI disks attached to the first adaptec channel,
one external RAID array attached to the second adaptec channel,
one DLT7000 drive with the tape library device attached to the
symbios (yeah, it's centralized backup maschine as you guessed).

I tried both vanilla 2.4.17 and redhat 2.4.9 sources,
compiled with configuration file attached at the end ot the message
(version for 2.4.9). The maschine boots without problems, compiles
kernel and generally works great. However, sometimes during some
heavy disk I/O operations with the raid array, kernel throws panic message
and dies. The raid array has been successfully used for a very long
time with another maschine and both 2.2 and 2.4 kernels, so I rule it out
as the source of problems. I don't use graphic/sound/usb capabilities
(usb also disabled in BIOS).

Ideas anyone? Eric? I want to keep the ultimate linux box :)

thanks,
Kresimir
