2.5.33 -- make[1]: *** [char] Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I have included output from make, strace -f -F -v -q make,
ver_linux and the Char section of .config. I hope this
will be sufficient. I don't see anything in the output
that makes it clear what is crashing and why.
