Hang on boot 2.6.1-rc2

OK, this gets very wierd ... not sure if it's a kernel thing or a
userspace thing, but 2.5.59 boots fine, so ...

Booting gets to mounting the filesystems, then appears to hang.
Alt+sysrq+T shows the appended, but then the serial console goes
into a very wierd state where every time I press return, I get
a few (10 or so) more characters of the bootup sequence. No idea
what the hell's going on ... (this is Debian sid, BTW).
