question about kenel configuration

Hi,
i have a little question about the kernel configuration. After 'make
menuconfig' some lines tell me to run 'make'.
Have i to do a 'make clean' or better 'make mrproper' before
configuration?
What is with the command 'make dep'? Is this not necessary?
