HPT372 (on Lanparty pro875) on 2.6.8/9 not working

I have a few lanparty pro875 mb's.
They have the highpoint 372 hardware raid controller on board (bios
says HPT370/372 v2.345).
Each time two IDE harddisk connected (one as master on each channel),
configured as mirror.
I have one running on Linux RedHat 9 with the driver downloaded
from the highpoint website. Works splendid, shows up as /dev/sda.
Recently I installed Fedore Core 2 (2.6.5-1.358 stock kernel).
Works splendid (shows up as /dev/hde).
Extract from the relevant boot sequence messages

Bit weird identifier though.
For various reasons, I wanted to upgrade to 2.6.8, got the source and
compiled. No go anymore.
Consistently, the two harddisks show up instead of the "virtual" mirror
disk, with all problems that follow (duplicate labels etc).
I checked the changes in drivers/ide/pci/hpt366.c. Directly taking
the version from 2.6.5 is not possible as the "layout" of the ide
structures seem to have changed quite a bit. I tried to "undo" the changes
manually in the 2.6.8 hpt366.c. No go, still two disks show up. So, I
fear some more (drastic) changes have been made in the general/generic
ide handling between 2.6.5 and 2.6.8, but for the life of me, I can't
find any, but then again, I am far from a kernel expert.
Also tried 2.6.9, same thing.
As these disks are my boot disks, testing is difficult and I have
no means of "grabbing" the boot log.
I looked at the log, mostly it is the same, only now it finds a HPT372N,
instead of the funny string above.
Also, standard it says "Using anticipatory io scheduler". I booted with
the option elevator=cfq, and indeed it said "Using cfq io scheduler", but
the net result was the same, two disks, no hardware raid recognised.

THis is as far as I can get, help would be very much appreciated.
