ethX interface rx errors

Hi,

Problem: ethernet interfaces shows up unusual rx error count.
Spontaneous system crash with heavy generic load or high packet traffic.

System has to be hard reset (reboot necessary).

Does anyone have an idea what may be the cause and how this problem
could be solved?

Any idea is highly appreciated.

System:
- processor k6233 and p3 550 with respective boards
- not overclocked
- same behaviour with kernel versions 2.4.20-28/2.6.6-10rc3
- ebtables/bridging active, eth0+eth1 below br0, problem persists with
distinct interfaces w/o bridging
- components already switched: mainboard, processor. Same hardware:
NICs, RAM, video, power supply, HDDs, CDROM, floppy.

While running the netio performance test system crashed:

You may already have noticed the asymmetrical traffic rates: Rx is much
less performant than Tx.

Btw: Important might be the fact that with some 2.4.2x kernels the samba
3.xx system could be reproducibly crashed by accessing shares with high
volume downloads from a win xp pro client.
Any ideas about this? (Might be OT? Is it kernel related?)

System does not always crash with netio test. Test had been made between 2 hosts
connected by 100mbit fd link; 2 switches in link.


Jeff Garzik has been contacted some time ago as he is RTL-NIC driver
maintainer as we believed the problem to be rtl-related. But, evidentally, the
3com NIC is affected also.

Hopefully, I provided the information anyone needs.
