Doesn't work either: 8-char tabs:

int i; /* comment */
};
int j; /* comment */

4-char tabs:

int i; /* comment */
};
int j; /* comment */

So we can either ban tabs altogether (unlikely) or agree
that pi is ~= 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749
and tab is strictly 8 chars.
