No sane software project would take on this (small) maintenance burden just
to save 50-60 kbytes. We would though.

I'm aware of that, and I'm not complaining. :) It's one of the things I love about this project. It's a healthy insanity, enforced by the squeaking of the wheels. Besides, code bloat is cumulative.
