This is too cute for my taste. Keep it simple.

I suppose one could do something like

static const char config_string[] = ""
#ifdef CONFIG_SMP
" SMP"
#endif
#ifdef CONFIG_NUMA
" NUMA"
#endif
;

if one really feels so motivated...
