I've done a reinstall because I goofed and booted the wrong pxe image. It was
running x86 instead of amd64. All fixed now, and the problem still persists.

Since I had to update my pxe setup, I updated to the latest debian netboot
image, and a newer base install, which came with a 3.2 kernel which doesn't
appear to have this issue.
