[PATCH v6 (resend) 0/3] bitfield fixes and tests

This is just a resend of v5, to Cc linux-wireless - we decided that
since we have the user coming in through the wireless-drivers tree,
it'll avoid all the usual problems if we'll take these also through
that tree.
