Cargo-cult doesn't mean we have to repear the same mistakes everywhere

Let's not encourage applications to use inefficient interfaces, when
using streaming I/O wouldn't be that more difficult. I'd argue that
supporting read() in the above drivers is part of the problem, not of
the solution.
