By "whole patch" you mean the entire message, not just the "diff -up"
output? Yes, I can do that, but maybe after you decide what changes you'd
like to see in the patch based on your concerns below. I've added my
comments below too. Then I can prepare a new message with the revised
diff and commentary.

The reason I thought it safe to put here was that they would get it anyway
if they got unbound from / rebound to the uvcvideo module, and they would
also get it if they returned an error response to the start transfer
request (because there is a SET_INTERFACE(0) call in the "error_video:"
goto block).

But I do agree it would be confusing to think of this as both a "start
streaming" and "stop streaming" call. I don't think it is correct to think
of this as a "start streaming" call as I don't see any justification for
that, but I was thinking of it more as a "device reset" type of call.

It is also present in uvc_video_suspend, and it is also called in
uvc_video_resume if the reset argument is true, so the device will already
be getting it in those circumstances (unless those routines are only used
for isochronous devices?)

Given your concerns, however, maybe it is best to just stick with this in
the stop_streaming routine (where it is already present for isochronous
devices and when suspending) and ditch the first part of the patch.

I don't have a Windows computers available where I'm set up to do any kind
of USB debugging. I would guess that it might issue it on stop_streaming,
but probably not on start_streaming.

If you have any pointers to documentation on how to set up USB/UVC
monitoring on a Windows computer I could try to test it with these
Epiphan devices.

Controls (at least ones I tested, like brightness) can successfully be
both queried and changed while streaming, and can also successfully be
queried and changed after a stop streaming is done. There are no error
messages printed on either stop streaming or restart streaming. The only
thing that happens is that no buffers ever get dequeued on the second
streaming attempt -- as if the device is still trying to stream to the
(now empty) set of buffers from the first streaming. Controls can still be
queried and changed, however.

Yes, it's definitely either a stop streaming instruction or a reset type
of instruction, not a start streaming instruction.

I will prepare a revised patch that only issues the SET_INTERFACE(0) call
as part of stop_streaming, where it is already done for isochronous
devices, and is already done in uvc_video_suspend, with comments to that
effect.

For exta safety, shall I build a bigger patch that adds a new hardware
quirk, sets it for the Epiphan vendor id (or I could even make it specific
to the device ids for the two models I've been testing with), and does the
call only if that quirk is set?

Let me know what you'd like and I'll prepare the appropriate revised
patch.
