Get this ... I did a make clean and re-compiled and all went well after
that. i *DID* to a make depend after applying the patches, so I assumed that
everything was compiled correctly. Evidently not. As Alice said, "Curiouser
and curiouser" :) Anyway ... it seems your code is fine.
