Just a hunch: did you recently change over to elf?

In the a.out format, executables have utmp and wtmp in
/var/adm.

However, in elf, I'm not entirely sure if they are in
/var/log or /var/run.

I just know that

ln -sf /var/log/utmp /var/log/wtmp /etc
ln -sf /var/log/utmp /var/log/wtmp /var/run

seems to take care of any problems I was having with utmp and
wtmp, which included the the 'w' program and any program
using utmp and wtmp not finding anyone logged in, when in fact
there were many people logged in.

After putting many pieces together, I finally figured this out.
Was there a general announcement about this that I missed, or
is it just one of the learning experiences we must encounter?
