1.3.16,17 debugger problems.

With versions 1.3.16 and 1.3.17 of the Linux kernel I have observed
that programs ran under gdb keep crashing at random points for no
apparent reason. There is no problem if you run the program from the
command line.
I upgraded from 1.3.13 to 1.3.16 and to 1.3.17, so the problem may
have appeared before 1.3.16. I'm using gcc-2.5.8 and libc 4.5.26
(yes, I know, a bit old).
