Sockets under linux...

I'm currently trying to compile the GNU 'screen' utility under linux
(i'm running 1.3.19) and it's configure script says I do not have
useable sockets nor usable pipes, therefore cannot compile.

I believe linux has usable sockets... does anyone know how to fix
this problem?
