1.3.x and disk corruptions

I have tried to run several versions of 1.3 kernels, and so far each one
has caused disk corruption of the sort below; these came straight from
the system logs.

Oct 18 08:23:37 ns1 kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 08:03): ext2_free_blocks:
Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 1702130793, count = 1
Oct 18 08:23:37 ns1 kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 08:03): ext2_free_blocks:
Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 1667309682, count = 1
Oct 18 08:23:37 ns1 kernel: EXT2-fs error (device 08:03): ext2_free_blocks:
Freeing blocks not in datazone - block = 1936942435, count = 1

The above machine is running PPP server access (ppp-2.2.0a). It is a VLB
486DX2/66, Adaptec VLB SCSI controller. Seems like most of the files are
in the /usr/src/linux tree, quite frequently ppp.c, but that may/should be
coincidental. I have variously tried 1.3.15, 1.3.17, 1.3.29, and each one
has caused this. I tried running 1.3.32 and 1.3.35 the last couple of
days, so I don't know which one caused the above problem. The machine did
not crash to induce this.

e2fsck is 0.5b.

1.2.13 runs very well, so I'm back to it until I'm sure there is some
understanding/resolution to this one.

I have run 1.3.x on another box, a 386/DX33, Adaptec 1542 controller, for
some time with no problems. It is ethernet connected only, no PPP. I
have no idea what difference that makes.

Any ideas on this one are much appreciated.....

Michael
