Re: Service freeze (more info)

Here at systemy.it we use a Linux box as mail server for several providers
(150 users, currently).

We've had the service-freeze problem for a long time.

We ran 1.2.11 for a few months, then our pop3 customers began
complaining. Accessing the pop server from a Unix box (either on lan
or through a 14400 modem link) never failed, while using Eudora under windoze
*did* froze either through the lan connection or the dialup link.

I suggested switching to the 1.3 series, where the CONFIG_SKB_LARGE
option is available (reading the last 1.2 patches showed that the
problem wasn't fixed there). The problem disappeared for some time.

We currently run 1.3.30, and our users (the ones with large mailboxes)
are still complaining about the pop server timing out.

The pc is not peculiar: 486-66, 16meg Ram, ISA/IDE controller,
3c507 board (dialup is through a Cisco box and reaches Linux via ether).

------
To summarize:

- Windoze-driven connections fail, unix ones don't. No info about the Mac.
- Only pop3 freezes (but it is the only service available to customers).
- The service timeouts only when the data is greater than the window-size.

I can't tell if it's a Linux fault or winsock one. But if some guru out
there can suggest some tests to make, I'd be happy to try it out.
I'm also ready to fill up my system log with messages in order to trace the
problem down when it happens.

Thanks you all
/alessandro
