On the other hand, one of our customers once had a 100% stable machine
which only had the problem that it mangled a particular archive when
uncompressing from tpe, always in the same spot.

The reason was that one of the SIMMs wasn't seated right.

So, don't rule out hardware just because the thing crashes always in th=
e
same spot...
