I don't know why the scans appear to be slow, but it's quite normal for
LILO to issue lots of stats. (3800-5200 on my systems.) Since Linux
gets them done very quickly, I never really noticed that there were
that many. I guess I'll add a preloaded cache in one of the next versions
to avoid at least some if not all of the scans.
