bash% ( make ) 2>&1 | tee make.result

tcsh% ( make ) |& tee make.result

This is a handy way to create a log file of what happens; in fact,
I've got bash functions and tcsh aliases to do all this for me..

Doing similar things when you use patch can also be invaluable.
