I recall seeing the 10-15% number a long time ago... and seeing it
refuted. Or more precisely, that you lost the 10-15% on the 386, but a
486 or better had less than 1% reduction due to the interactions of
some particular details of the processor. Perhaps however did the
analysis could come forward and reiterate it...

As for "seeming" slower, consider that you *know* it's ELF and at some
level may expect it to be... I'm not saying that it isn't -- I'm
saying that you need a better methodolgy, like a double blind test
(preferably with someone less familiar with the system.) Also consider
that you're probably running mixed-ELF/Aout (I've only heard of one
person running *pure* ELF and I don't think it was you :-) which would
lead to having two sets of shared libc in core, which in a low memory
situation might be significant.
