Cannot Compile 1.3.74

Sorry that I don't have more detail, but I'm at work.

(1) make menuconfig doesn't seem to work:

The ncurses display box which indicates something to the effect of
setting up configuration scripts or files comes up, then I am
prompted whether I want to save the new configuration or not...

(2) make zImage seems to fail:

There is a "for i in ftape" or something, and I didn't ask for
ftape support... Make fails because it can't find ftape.

Again, sorry for the lack of detail. If anyone has any hints, please
let me know.
