performance problem

The hardware:

8 MB RAM
Adaptec 1520 (SoundBlaster/SCSI)
SCSI Zip drive (removable hard disk, maybe like a normal 1990 disk)
DOS filesystem
Linux 1.3.77 and MS-DOS 6.22
Most recent mtools

Test conditions:

I ran eatmem to flush the cache, and had all my RAM free at the
start of a test. (DOS had been rebooted, so nothing in cache)
I copied a 4.2 MB file (linux source archive) from the Zip drive
to another file on the same drive.

Results:

MS-DOS 16 minutes
Linux msdosfs 4 minutes
Linux mtools 1 minute

Conclusions:

MS-DOS sucks with its own filesystem
mtools kicks our ass
