Because newer kernels have radically different memory management, among
other things, and thus probably exhibit totally different behavior when
doing the "same" things to your hardware.

You ever heard the story about the system which performed 100% flawless=

except for one special tar file which couldn't be read back from tape?
It was a SIMM that wasn't socketed correctly... happened to one of our
customers.
