AMD 486DX4/120 WB cache - SiS chipset - internal/external cache on or off,
doesn't make a difference. Every setting in the bios set to the slowest setting
and it still occurs.
Ram - 16MB of 60ns 72-pin SIMMS - tested and tested and tested over and over
VLB Mach32, etc, nothing else noteworthy.
I don't get "sig 11" errors like most people were complaining about up til
1.3.90, but I get "Illegal Instruction" errors during kernel compiles (while
running 1.3.90 or .91) ... and when it aborts, even if I do a "ps -auxw", it
will say "Illegal instruction" (yes, I'm running procps .99a, before I get
flamed), reboot, things will be fine again.
Anyone else having those problems? 'Make' will abort with error 132 when it
happens.
I have run it on standard kernels 1.3.90+ and this started in the mid-1.3.50
range. I also did the patch that preserves the BIOS settings and it didn't make
a difference either.
So, for now, I just run everything at full-bore 2-1-1-1 refresh, etc, etc and
can run anything under the sun, except for compiling kernels. I've overloaded
it with X-Windows, using the full 16MB swap I have set aside... solid as a
rock.
I suspect either this is still a little buglet running around in the kernel or
my chip is bad or motherboard. Next thing I'm going to try is the old 1.2
memcpy_tofs. Wish me luck. :)
